Early detection is vital to protecting your health.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which aims to raise awareness about the risks and signs of breast cancer, as well as methods for diagnosing breast cancer during its earlier and more treatable stages. It provides an excellent opportunity to talk about what early detection is, and why it matters.
Early detection refers to the detection of breast cancer while it is in its earliest - and most easily treatable - stages, such as stage 1 or stage 2.
Early detection is key in the treatment of breast cancer, and can be literally life-saving for many patients.
To increase your chance of detecting cancer early, follow these step:
Monthly Self Exams
Adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast self-exams at least once a month. Forty percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump, so establishing a regular breast self-exam is very important.
Self- Awareness
Self-exams can help you know how your breast normally look and feel so you can report any changes
Warning signs to look for : a lump, hard knot, or thickening inside the breast or underarm area swelling, warmth, or darkening of the breast change in the size or shape of the breast dimpling or puckering of the skin.
Well-woman Exam
Women are recommended to visit their family doctor or gynocologist every year for a well-women exam. Take the opportunity to discuss with your doctor any questions or concerns you have regarding your breast health.
After 40 Annual Mammagram
If you are 40 years old or older, you are recommended to get a mammogram every year. It is an x-ray of the breast
and is safe, quick, and relatively painless. Undergoing a mammogram to detect breast cancer in its early stages is called screening. If you have already noticed a suspected symptom of breast cancer, you may choose to have a mammogram to confirm it.
Breast cancer may never be completely prevented but early detection provides the best possibility of successful treatment.
